Crochet Sunflower Coaster
by Adriana Maronese
Some things don’t need to be big to feel special. A warm mug in your hands. A quiet afternoon. A little handmade piece sitting on the table, doing nothing more than being there and somehow making everything feel cozier.
When I was little, I spent my summers at my grandparents’ house, surrounded by endless fields of sunflowers. Tall, golden, always facing the sun like they knew a secret I hadn’t figured out yet. Days felt longer there. Simpler. Like time had decided to take a break and just exist for a while.
I think that’s why I keep coming back to them. That feeling. Soft light, warm air, and nothing urgent to do except enjoy the moment. And honestly, that’s exactly what crochet feels like too. Slow, grounding, a little repetitive in the best way. Stitch by stitch, you build something small that somehow carries a bigger memory.
This coaster is a tiny piece of that. A little circle of sunshine you can hold in your hands, or leave under your coffee like a quiet reminder to slow down.
Because sometimes, that’s all we really need.
Materials
- 3.5 mm crochet hook
- Disc: Brown yarn
- Petals: Yellow yarn
- A piece of rubber non-slip mat (optional)
Stitches
US terms- ch – chain
- sc – single crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- dc – double crochet
- sl st – slip stitch
- BLO – back loop only
- FLO – front loop only
Instructions
Center Disc
Start by making the center disc in brown yarn (or your preferred color).
Change color.
First Round of Petals (BLO)
We’ll work in the back loops only (BLO) and create one petal every 2 stitches. That gives us 27 petals total.
Tip: Try to keep your chains slightly loose so the petals don’t curl too tightly.
Second Round of Petals (FLO)
These petals sit just in front of the first layer. We’ll work in the front loops only (FLO).
Optional finishing
Want it a bit sturdier (and less slidey on the table)?
- Cut a circle of rubber non-slip mat slightly smaller than your coaster
- Sew or glue it to the back
