Some crochet projects begin with a carefully planned idea board. Percy began with leftover yarn staring at me from the shelf.
I had one of those awkward amounts of black and white velvet yarn. Too much to ignore, not enough for a bigger project, and just enough to quietly judge my organizational skills every time I walked past it.
So I turned the situation into something useful and very cute. Percy the Penguin was my answer, and honestly, a strong one. Tiny body, soft texture, excellent vibes.
He’s quick to make, beginner-friendly, and perfect for winter decorating or gifting. Pop him on a shelf, tuck him into a stocking, or let him stand guard beside the Christmas tree like the little legend he is.
- Use a stitch marker to track your rounds.
- Crochet in continuous rounds unless stated otherwise.
- Velvet yarn can hide stitches, so don’t panic. Your fingers know more than your eyes.
- Start by making all the small details first: the belly, beak, and wings. Then you’ll have everything ready once the body is complete.
Using white velvet yarn:
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Using black velvet yarn:
Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.
Using yellow or orange yarn:
Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.
Using black velvet yarn:
- Sew the belly centered on the front of the body.
- Attach the beak in the middle of the upper belly area.
- Sew the wings to each side between Rnds 10 and 14.
- Insert safety eyes between Rnds 6 and 8.
- Begin stuffing firmly. Add the weighted insert now if using one.
Continue closing the body:
Fasten off, close the opening, and weave in ends.
